What is an MPLS Network?
MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) is a mechanism in high-performance telcom networks that directs data from one place on the network to another based on short path labels rather than long network addresses. MPLS is highly scalable and protocol agnostic.
In an MPLS network, packets of data are assigned labels, and all packet-forwarding decisions are made solely on the contents of these labels, eliminating the need to examine the packets themselves. As a result, end-to-end circuits can be created across any type of transport medium, using any protocol.
At Eze Castle, we like to boast that our private cloud services are delivered via an MPLS network which connects our data centers. That sounds good, but what are the real benefits of this type of network infrastructure? We asked our vice president of networking services, Mike Abbey, for some insights. Here’s what we learned:
What are the advantages of an MPLS Network?
Flexibility: MPLS allows network operators to have greater flexibility in terms of re-routing traffic should an issue occur. For instance, if there is a bottleneck or sudden link failure in the network, the operator can divert the traffic flow to avoid it.
Scalability: For firms with a number of geographically diverse branches, or those who are expecting to open new offices as the company expands, MPLS networks are extremely cost effective. Each new location simply requires one MPLS link which can be quickly added (or removed should an office relocate or close).
Redundancy & Disaster Recovery: MPLS-based services enable data centers to be linked via multiple redundant connections and allow remote sites to be efficiently reconnected to backup locations if necessary. As a result, firms can seamlessly resume operations and maintain access to crucial applications and data in the event of an outage. Additionally, MPLS networks are designed to overcome minor issues or failed connections. Data can be easily re-routed through the next optimum path to avoid harmful downtime.
