The day that many Apple (and Andrioid) users wait for every year finally came - the release of the newest Apple products! The world watched as Tim Cook unveiled the new iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and the iPhone XR along with a number of new products and applications. We’ve recapped some highlights below.

Design

Apple iPhone XsThe new iPhones don’t look all that different from the iPhone X. The new phones, though, come in silver, space grey, and the all new gold! The phones are made with a new durable glass and upgraded dust and water resistance. The IP68 allows the iPhone water resistance abilities to 2 meters deep for up to 30 minutes – they even tested this with liquids such as tea, OJ, wine, and beer.

Display

The iPhone XS is a Super Retina OLED display that it 5.8 inches. The other new iPhone, iPhone XS Max, is a 6.5-inch display. Both phones will have 3D touch, tap-to-wake, true tone display, and wide color.

The camera capabilities of these new iPhones are extraordinary. There is an infrared camera, flood illuminator, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, speaker, microphone, front camera, and dot projector – meaning that, yes, there is still FaceID. Apple explained that this is the most secure facial authentication ever in a smartphone with faster algorithms and a faster secure enclave.

The XS camera features a 12-megapixel wide camera and offers a f.18 aperture. On the front, you will find a 7-megapixel camera with f.2.2 aperture and faster sensor. During the Keynote, Apple also introduced “Smart HDR” which will make the images pop more with shadows and highlight details. Apple also improved the “bokeh” effect. This effect removes the focus in the background causing a blur in portrait mode photos.

There is a new slider that will allow users to reduce or deepen the depth of field (the blurriness) after the photo is taken. Think about all of the great images you’ll be able to capture!

Other Notable Features

One of the biggest notable upgrade on the iPhone is the upgrade to an A12 Bionic chip. This is the first nanometer chip packed with 6.9 billion transistors. This chip will allow you to have up to 512 GB of storage.

Apple, for the first time ever, also announced that the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will support dual-sim by using eSIM. This means that you’ll be able to have two phone numbers on one phone (this is especially great when traveling overseas). In China, the iPhone XS will have two physical SIM slots.

iPhone XR, similar to that of the iPhone X, has many of the same features that the XS and XS Max have. This phone has the most advanced LCD screen ever and stretches top to bottom of the phone and has a 6.1” diagonal. This phone will come in colors such as white, space grey, blue, coral, yellow, and red.

What's New with Apple Watch?

Apple Watch Series 4The Apple Watch Series 4 has become the #1 watch in the world. This watch will feature cellular built in to the watch (if you choose to have it of course!), a new display that will go to the edge of the watch with curved corners, and redesigned interfaces and new watch faces/displays. The watch will have a speaker that is 50% louder and Apple placed the microphone of the watch on the opposite side of the speaker, reducing echo.

One of the cooler new features is that the watch can detect if you fall, trip or slip and can even send an emergency “SOS” if you are immobile after the fall. The watch also has 3 new heart features:

  • Your watch will send you a notification if heart rate is too low

  • Your watch can detect irregular rhythm such as afib

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) feature now available – ECG can help diagnose certain diseases. You can take your ECG anywhere right from wrist.

Users should also expect new apps as well as the new operating system, iOS 12. Apple users can begin to pre-order the Apple Watch, iPhone XS, XS Max and XR  later this week.
