Throwback Thursday: Will you trade in your iPhone for the Nokia 3310?

By Katelyn Orrok | Thursday, April 6th, 2017

Do you remember the Nokia 3310? C’mon, you know which one I’m talking about. It was that indestructible T9 phone that was a must-have back in the 2000s. It was a huge seller primarily due to its long battery life and its durability (as a result of its unique casing). Now more than 17 years after its original debut, the Nokia 3310 is being relaunched. Set to release in Q2 of 2017 we’re curious to see the hype behind this new, but old phone.

After scouring the Internet, here’s a list of why we think some people are getting excited for the return of this ‘old school’ device.

1) The battery life.

The original Nokia had a battery life of 11 days on standby. Can you imagine even going 11 hours without charging your phone anymore? With the 3310, there was never a need to carry around a phone charger and find a plug half way through your day. Now the new Nokia 3310 claims to have a month of battery life when on standby and 22 hours of talking time (if that's relevant to you and you still talk on the phone in this day and age).

2) You won't be checking your emails.

Society today has become so reliant on the smartphone features such as email access and social media that having just the basics back (calling, texting, alarms) might be a good change.

3) It is “indestructible”.

Although the new version is lighter and slimmer than its predecessor, it is expected that the updated model will hold the same durability as the original Nokia 3310. It isn't water resistant, but it will survive the accidental drops unlike most contemporary smartphones.

4) It is cheap.

Compared to the price tag of an iPhone, the Nokia 3310 is a real deal. Starting at €49, you don't have to worry about dropping, throwing or misplacing this phone. If anything does happen to the "indestructible" phone, just buy a new one.

5) It is retro, a timeless classic that will never age.

Retro products have been making a comeback in the past few years – think: Polaroid cameras, record players and now cell phones. Although there have been updates to these retro products, the nostalgia is still there.

6) Last but not least: snake.

No need to download, because everyone’s favorite game, Snake, comes pre-loaded on your new 3310. There has been talk about an app store debuting with the new Nokia 3310, but with only 2G capabilities you may prefer to stick to the basics.

Apart from retro enthusiasts, here’s our list of who the Nokia may be great for:

  • Grandparents who have not embraced smartphones,

  • Children easily distracted by apps and the Internet, who easily break phones or who can't call their parents because their "phone died," or

  • The person who just wants to take a step back from the hustle and bustle of everyday – it may just be the perfect vacation phone.

What is your take on this? Is trading in your iPhone a no-brainer or are you still confused about the hype?
